I used to scoff at the idea that being a full time mother was the "hardest job there is". I consider that to be a patronizing statement; something people say as a pat on the head of stay-at-home moms to express appreciation, while secretly thinking 'she took the easy route'. I'm not tooting my own horn when I say that even living away from my husband for three years, with three children, it just wasn't that hard. It was monotonous, lonely, and occasionally puzzling, but not a difficult job. Then I had a fourth child, and that child developed a severe case of thrush. My tune has changed. This is now the most challenging job I've ever had. For those that don't know (like me) ...

It's basically a yeast infection that starts in the mouth, and can also cause diaper rash. We started treating what we thought was a typical, early diaper rash in Margo her first week home. Then I noticed it getting worse and started taking her to the doctor. After three visits, and a fourth to the dermatologist, it was diagnosed as thrush that caused a very serious blistering rash. She is on oral and topical meds, and for a few days now I've been changing her diaper by running her under water instead of wiping, to avoid irritating it. We've now taken it to another level and she has to be diaper free for the next 48 hours while I treat the area. Diaper free may sound all back-to-nature, no big deal, but trust me it's a big deal. Changing the towels, laundering the towels, and cleaning off/re-applying medicine is my full time job. I'm talking every 30 minutes kinda job. Without her snug onesies and blankets she feels insecure, so I have to hold her most of the time to keep her comfortable and warm. I sent my toddler to my parents house, and warned the twins that they need to be self sufficient for the next two days, and we're just going to power through it! In the mean time, please send happy, healing, sleepy thoughts to the 'O' house :)
